Svaneti is a historical region of Georgia. It is the highest inhabited place surrounded by 3,000–5,000 meter peaks of the Caucasus. Most of the region is covered by mixed and coniferous forests. The mountains are separated by deep gorges. Svaneti is divided into two parts Upper and lower Svaneti. The both parts attract visitors with its architectural treasures and mystical landscapes. The famous Upper-Svanetian towers are erected mainly in the 9th-12th centuries and each of them has its own history. The Georgian orthodox churches make the region more attractive with their wall paintings, frescoes and icons of the Middle Ages.
